AI is not replacing professionals outright. It changes the structure of work: time-consuming preparation phases get shorter, but responsibility and judgement remain with people. According to OECD estimates, roughly 27 per cent of expert roles in high-income countries face significant pressure for change over the next decade, and this is no longer limited to routine positions.
A technology executive told me in March 2026 that their team had halved the time spent on contract review using AI. No one had yet decided what to do with the time saved.
Who decides how far AI reaches?
To me, this is above all a management question, and few organisations have answered it so far. Technology does not decide how freed-up capacity is directed: will it go towards building competitive advantage, or simply cutting costs? Finland has a tradition of reaching agreement on major changes in working life before they sweep through. In AI development, that step has not yet been taken, and that is a strategic gap worth acting on now.
AI is not the enemy of office work, but unmanaged change is.
Who in your organisation decides how far AI reaches and what it replaces? If the answer is unclear, it is worth finding out before someone else decides for you.
